Dr. Lena Zuckerwise serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Politics and Policy at Simmons University. A political theorist specializing in race, gender, and democratic theory, her forthcoming book examines Black political rebellion through the lens of Hannah Arendt's philosophy. Her scholarship explores anti-Black racism in American politics, feminist political thought, and the political dimensions of art and architecture.
With a PhD in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (where she received the Distinguished Teaching Award), Dr. Zuckerwise teaches courses spanning political theory, feminist theory, gender politics, Black political thought, and theories of justice. Her pedagogical approach connects historical frameworks with contemporary issues, including specialized offerings on transgender politics and freedom.
Prior to joining Simmons, she taught at Wellesley College and Mount Holyoke College. Dr. Zuckerwise engages in public scholarship through media commentary on elections and LGBTQIA+ rights, and provides thought leadership on issues including the political targeting of trans children and voting rights restrictions.
