Lena Scheibinger is a research associate and doctoral student at ifeas. She holds a master's degree in ethnology and African studies from universities in Bayreuth and Mainz, completed in 2023. Her master’s thesis focused on ethnographic collecting practices and ethnological theory formation in post-1945 West Germany. Her current doctoral research examines the work of ethnologist and curator Erika Sulzmann (1911–1989), including Sulzmann’s nine expeditions to the Democratic Republic of Congo (1951–1954 onwards) and the acquisition of ~1,000 cultural artifacts for the Ethnographic Studies Collection.
Her research interests span colonial-era ethnographic practices, museum curation histories, and the socio-political dimensions of cultural artifact acquisition. She specializes in German post-war ethnological scholarship and its entanglements with African diasporic heritage.
