Lei Liu is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience within The Faculty of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University, Denmark. Based at Fredrik Bajers Vej 7H in Aalborg Øst, Dr. Liu specializes in environmental microbiology with particular focus on microbial ecology and biofilms research.
Dr. Liu's research interests span multiple areas of environmental microbiology, with primary focus on metagenomics, antimicrobial resistance, and microbiome analysis. Their work integrates advanced genomic techniques with environmental engineering applications, particularly in wastewater treatment systems. Key research areas include the study of microbial communities in anaerobic digesters, development of quantitative methods for environmental microbiome analysis, and investigation of bacterial pathogenesis mechanisms. The research has significant implications for circular economy approaches in water treatment and understanding host-pathogen interactions.
Dr. Liu is actively involved in the REThiNk project (2022-2027), which focuses on recovery of extracellular polymers from wastewater treatment residuals as a new circular biopolymer. This project, funded by Otto Mønsteds Fond, Novo Nordisk Foundation, and International Water Association Denmark, represents a significant research effort in sustainable water resource management. With 26 research outputs documented and ongoing publications through 2025, Dr. Liu maintains a productive research trajectory with strong international collaborations.
Within laboratory settings, Dr. Liu works in the Section of Environmental Microbiology focusing on Microbial Ecology and Biofilms. Their research integrates computational and experimental approaches to study microbial communities, particularly using metagenomic techniques to understand microbial functionality in environmental systems. Current work emphasizes the development of standardized methods for environmental microbiome analysis and the application of these methods to wastewater treatment processes.
