Lei Geng is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Iowa, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on bioanalytical chemistry, particularly the development of advanced spectroscopic and imaging techniques for cancer diagnosis and the study of molecular dynamics in nanoporous materials.
- Education: PhD from Duke University, postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and BS from the University of Science and Technology of China.
His group has pioneered two-dimensional fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (2D FCS) to detect cancerous transformations by analyzing spectral and temporal fluorescence contrasts in tissue, aiming for less invasive and faster diagnostics. Additionally, he investigates interfacial behaviors in nanometer-sized pores using single-molecule spectroscopy, addressing challenges in chromatographic separations, drug delivery, and catalysis. His work explores how pore size, structure, and surface chemistry affect molecular diffusion, adsorption, and transport, with applications in reducing chromatographic band broadening and peak tailing.
Lei Geng's recent publications emphasize fluorescence correlation imaging, confocal microscopy, and adsorption dynamics in nanoporous systems. His research bridges analytical chemistry, biophysics, and materials science, advancing technical performance in chemical and biological applications.
