Dr. Leeja Carter is a faculty member at the University of Western States (UWS) in the field of sport and exercise psychology. Her work focuses on gendered racism in sport, Black feminist politics, and culturally responsive health approaches for women of color. She has earned national and international recognition as a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and founder of the Coalition for Food and Health Equity.
- Education: B.S. and M.S. in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University; Post-Master’s Certification in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania; PhD in Kinesiology (Psychology of Human Movement) from Temple University.
Research Interests: Dr. Carter’s work bridges feminist sport psychology, social justice, and inclusion in sports. She explores cross-cultural barriers to exercise engagement, particularly for racial and ethnic minority girls, and advocates for equity-driven practices.
Scientific Awards: In 2018, she received the Fulbright Specialist Scholar award for her consultancy on the “This Girl Can” project in the UK.
Leadership Roles: She serves as the Association for Applied Sport Psychology’s (AASP) first Diversity and Inclusion Executive Board division head and founded the Coalition for Food and Health Equity. Her media appearances include CNN, NPR, and Psychology Today.
