Lee Panich is a Professor of Anthropology at Santa Clara University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Indigenous negotiations with colonial institutions in California, particularly through archaeological, ethnographic, and archival methods. He collaborates with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and other stakeholders to address cultural preservation and tribal sovereignty. Panich teaches courses on historical archaeology, colonial California, and virtual methods in anthropology.
His work emphasizes Indigenous persistence in colonial contexts, challenging narratives of erasure through material evidence. Recent projects include archaeological studies at Mission Santa Clara and digital initiatives like the Thámien Ohlone Augmented Reality Tour. Panich has authored books such as Narratives of Persistence (2020) and co-edited volumes on Indigenous-colonial interactions in the Americas.
