Lee McGowan is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast's School of Business and Creative Industries. As a core researcher at the Australian Centre for Pacific Islands Research, his interdisciplinary work bridges creative practice and sports studies.
Research focuses on the sociocultural intersections of football (soccer), creative writing, and community engagement. Methodologies include practice-based research producing traditional/non-traditional outputs ranging from digital histories to exhibitions. Current projects examine women's football development in Pacific Island communities and literary sports journalism.
Publications demonstrate consistent investigation of sports narratives through multiple lenses: historical analysis of Australian women's football; examinations of literary sports reporting; and creative explorations of fan cultures. Recent books document beach soccer histories and women's football in Oceania.
Honors include:
- Queensland Community Male Champion for Women's Football (2019)
- BCC Lord Mayor's Helen Taylor Community History Award (2017)
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015)
