Lee Artz is a Professor of Media Studies and Director of the Center for Global Studies at Purdue University Northwest. A former steelworker and machinist, his union-funded Master’s degree in Communication shaped his academic trajectory. He leverages experiences as a high school and AAU basketball coach to organize his teaching. Artz holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa, an M.A. from California State University, East Bay, and degrees from Golden Gate University and an unspecified institution for his B.S. in English Education, Black Studies, and Mathematics.
His research focuses on the political economy of media, global news framing, and media’s role in shaping social order. Key interests include transnational media, US popular culture, and the interplay between media industries and social justice. He has authored/co-authored books like Global Media Dialogues and The Pink Tide, and contributed to analyses of media access and social movements.
Artz has received notable awards, including the Sujack Award for Teaching Excellence (Loyola University Chicago) and recognition for scholarly contributions. He advises student groups such as Lambda Pi Eta and Students for Justice in Palestine, and previously served as NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative and Director of Graduate Studies in Communication.
Leading the Center for Global Studies, he collaborates on initiatives like the One World, One Struggle webinars. His work bridges labor activism, media critique, and pedagogical innovation rooted in grassroots experiences.
