Dr. Lee Airton is an Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies in Education at Queen's University, where they lead research on gender diversity, human rights policy, and inclusive education. They hold an MA and PhD from York University and serve as Graduate Faculty. Dr. Airton founded significant advocacy initiatives including They Is My Pronoun (2012), the No Big Deal Campaign (2016), and Gegi.ca (2021), a bilingual K-12 self-advocacy resource.
Their research focuses on gender and sexual diversity in K-12 education, teacher preparation, anti-racist frameworks, and queer theory methodologies. Recent work examines policy implementation, institutional barriers for gender non-conforming teacher candidates, and quantitative approaches to intersectionality.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on educational equity, with recent articles exploring campus inclusion strategies, teacher education reform, and policy analysis across Canadian educational contexts. Research employs diverse methodologies from action research to philosophical inquiry and policy analysis.
Awards include the 2017 Youth Role Model of the Year Award and Ophea's 2025 Award of Distinction for leadership in inclusive education. SSHRC has funded 10+ research grants since 2018.
Dr. Airton supervises graduate students, collaborates with school boards nationwide, and leads the Principal’s Action Group on Gender and Sexual Diversity. They have delivered 60+ media commentaries on gender diversity topics.
