Professor Leanne Hepburn is a Professor at the University of Essex's School of Life Sciences, with roles including Director of Education (2019-2022) and Employability Director (2017-2019). She holds a PhD in Coral Reef Geoscience from Manchester Metropolitan University (2006-2010), an MSc in Marine and Fisheries Sciences (2000-2001), and a BSc in Zoology with Marine Biology (1994-1998), both from the University of Aberdeen.
Her research focuses on marine conservation (coral reefs, oyster ecology, mesophotic reefs), sustainability solutions, and innovative pedagogy. Key interests include contemplative education, equity in environmental science, and science-policy interfaces. She leads the Coral Reef Research Unit and explores science communication through art and public engagement.
Her recent publications highlight coral reef resilience under climate change, pandemic-era pedagogy, and marine conservation strategies. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address biodiversity loss and sustainable development goals.
