Leanne E. Smith is a Teaching Professor in the English Department at East Carolina University (ECU). She joined the faculty in Spring 2007 after completing her B.A. and M.A. at ECU, followed by an M.F.A. from Goucher College. Her research focuses on creative nonfiction, North Carolina literature and culture, and folklife. She actively participates in folk music, dance, and cultural preservation initiatives, including roles with the Green Grass Cloggers and North Carolina Folklore Society.
Her academic career includes roles as Class Notes Editor for East: The Magazine of ECU, Associate Director of the ECU Poetry Forum, and President of the Folk Arts Society of Greenville. She has authored books, films, and articles exploring regional culture, folklore, and literary analysis. Notable works include Alfred the Possum (2015) and documentary films on traditional dance.
Smith’s publications span creative nonfiction, folklore studies, and literary criticism. Her work often bridges academic research with community engagement, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to culture and history. She has received multiple awards for academic and creative excellence, including the John D. and Dorothy C. Ebbs Fellowship and Gravely Foundation Award.
She teaches courses such as ENGL 3860 (Introduction to Nonfiction Writing) and ENGL 1100 (Foundations of College Writing). Her professional activities include board memberships in cultural organizations and leadership roles in student groups like the ECU Poetry Forum and English Graduate Student Organization.
