Leanna Stiefel is a Professor of Economics at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and co-Director of the Education and Social Policy Master's Program. She specializes in school finance, education policy, applied economics, and statistics. Her research focuses on special education policy, small high school costs, student mobility impacts, housing instability effects, and immigrant student achievement. She has authored influential books such as Statistical Analysis for Public and Non-Profit Managers and Measuring School Performance and Efficiency.
Stiefel holds a Ph.D. in Economics (1972) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an AB with high honors from the University of Michigan (1967), and an Advanced Professional Certificate in Finance from NYU Stern (1984). She has served as past president of the American Education Finance Association and consultant for organizations like the National Science Foundation and New York ACLU.
Her research interests emphasize causal effects of policies on education outcomes, leveraging quantitative methods. Notable projects include analyzing special education equity, the effects of housing instability on learning, and resource distribution in urban schools. Her work frequently appears in top journals and policy reports, addressing systemic inequities in education financing and policy implementation.
