Dr. Leah Flack is a Professor of English at Marquette University, affiliated with the Department of English within the Klingler College of Arts & Sciences. Her office is located in Marquette Hall 219, and she can be reached at leah.flack@marquette.edu. A first-generation college graduate who initially studied Biochemistry and Music, she transitioned to English and Russian studies, a decision she credits as pivotal to her scholarly path.
Her research focuses on comparative modernism, classical reception studies, and the intersection of literature with political and social contexts. She examines how ancient texts like Homer’s epics are reinterpreted in modern crises, challenging traditional views of their role in 20th-century literature. Current projects include directing the Narrative 4 initiative (N4@MU) to foster empathy through storytelling and completing a decades-long study of Osip Mandelstam’s archive.
Flack’s publications include James Joyce and Classical Modernism (2020) and Modernism and Homer (2015), with work appearing in journals like James Joyce Quarterly and Modernism/modernity. She teaches courses on Modernist Literature, Twentieth-Century Literature, and the Western Literary Tradition.
Her academic interests extend to literature’s role in shaping identity and resisting oppression, blending traditional scholarship with community-engaged research on creativity and future-oriented storytelling. Spring 2025 marks her sabbatical period.
