Lea Stirling is a Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Arts. She specializes in Roman and Late Antique archaeology, with a focus on North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Her work spans material culture, statuary practices, and funerary landscapes.
- Education: PhD in Classical Art and Archaeology (1994), MA in Latin and Classical Art and Archaeology (1994, 1990), BA in Classics (1988), all from the University of Michigan and Alberta.
Stirling's research explores the continuity and transformation of classical art and culture during Late Antiquity, including the recontextualization of pagan statuary in Byzantine civic spaces, bio-archaeological analysis of Roman cemeteries, and provincial collecting practices in Gaul. Her fieldwork co-directed excavations in Tunisia and examined sites across France, Greece, Turkey, and Tunisia.
Her publications and awards highlight her expertise in Roman archaeology, including the Canada Research Chair (2001-2012) and AIA publication subventions. She teaches courses on Roman culture, women in antiquity, Roman art, and the archaeology of the Roman army, and is currently accepting Master's students.
