Dr. Lawrence T. Locklear is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of American Indian Studies and Director of Southeast American Indian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. An enrolled citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, his work focuses on Lumbee history, American Indian education, and tribal governance.
Research interests include:
- Historical and contemporary Lumbee identity
- Higher education access for Indigenous students
- UNC Pembroke institutional history
- Native American political engagement
His publications examine:
- Historical linguistics of tribal nomenclature
- Educational experiences of commuter students
- Indigenous community engagement
Honors and awards:
- Outstanding Student Support Award (2021)
- Phi Sigma Nu Nu Man of the Year (2016)
- Willie Parker Peace History Book Award (2014)
- Chancellor's Award of Excellence (2013)
- D.T. Smithwick Newspaper and Magazine Article Award (2012)
Leadership roles include serving as Chief President of Phi Sigma Nu fraternity and on the Lumbee Tribal Council. He co-authored the institutional history 'Hail to UNCP! A 125-Year History of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke'.
