Lawrence R. Sita is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland (UMD), and former Associate Dean for Faculty, Research, and Diversity in the College of Chemical and Life Sciences. He holds a B.S. (Honors) in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University (1981) and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from MIT (1985). His research focuses on transition metal catalysis, polymer synthesis, and nanostructured materials, with an emphasis on sustainable industrial processes. Key contributions include innovations in living coordinative polymerization, nanostructured polymer phases, and catalyst design for energy-efficient chemical transformations. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with applied material science, leveraging advanced analytical techniques like NMR, TEM, and X-ray diffraction.
Major recognitions include the Beckman Young Investigator Award (1995–1998), Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (1995–2000), and NSF Special Creativity Award (2004–2006). The Sita Group is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, combining catalytic innovation with nanoscale material engineering to address global challenges in energy and sustainability. Current projects involve scalable sugar-polyolefin conjugates, stereomodulated polyolefins, and sub-10 nm nanostructured films.
Research training in his lab integrates synthesis of air-sensitive compounds, advanced catalytic methods, and cutting-edge characterization tools, preparing students for careers at the interface of chemistry and materials science.
