Lawrence Power is an internationally-acclaimed viola professor at Zurich University of the Arts' School of Music, where he teaches in the String Department. Heralded by the New York Times as 'a musician on a mission to make us pay attention to the viola,' Professor Power has significantly advanced the instrument's prominence through both performance excellence and the creation of the Viola Commissioning Circle (VCC).
Professor Power's research interests focus on Viola Performance, Contemporary Music Commissioning, Chamber Music, Orchestral Performance, Music Education, and New Music Advocacy. His work with the VCC has led to a substantial body of fresh repertoire by today's finest composers, addressing the historical lack of dedicated viola works. His performances are characterized by richness of sound and technical mastery, with critics noting his ability to move beyond technical display to convey profound musical messages.
As a performer, Professor Power maintains an active international schedule, with the 2025/26 season featuring performances with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and multiple other prestigious ensembles. He also leads his own orchestra, Collegium, comprising talented young musicians from across Europe. In 2021, he was named an Associate Artist at London's Wigmore Hall for a five-year term.

Professor Power's approach combines performance, education, and advocacy, making him a significant figure in contemporary classical music. His 'play-directing' technique, where he leads orchestras while performing as soloist, demonstrates innovative integration of solo and ensemble performance practices. His commitment to expanding the viola repertoire has created new opportunities for both performers and audiences to engage with this often-underrepresented instrument.
