Lawrence O. Gostin is Distinguished University Professor and Founding O’Neill Chair in Global Health Law at Georgetown University, serving as Faculty Director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law. He holds adjunct roles at Johns Hopkins University (Public Health) and international universities like Oxford and Melbourne. His academic career includes roles as Associate Dean for Research at Georgetown Law (2004–2008), Editor-in-Chief of major law journals, and advisor to global health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO).
Education: B.A., State University of New York; J.D., Duke University; honorary doctorates from SUNY, University of Sydney, and Cardiff University. His research focuses on global health law, human rights, and pandemic governance. He co-chaired the Lancet Commission on Global Health Law and leads global initiatives like the Pandemic Treaty drafting process with WHO’s Intergovernmental Negotiation Body.
Recent work includes advising on federal quarantine networks, global health security assessments, and the G-7 Summit’s Universal Health Coverage agenda. Awards include the Adam Yarmolinsky Medal (National Academy of Medicine) and multiple lifetime achievement recognitions for public health law contributions.
