Lawrence Magennis is a Lecturer in Product Design at Belfast School of Art, Ulster University. He serves as Sustainability Lead at Belfast School of Art and is a member of the AHSS Sustainability Working Group. Additionally, he acts as Placement Tutor and participates in PILOT: Design & Craft Global Makers Working Group.
His educational background includes a BDes in Product and Furniture Design from Ulster University (2014), an MA in Creative Arts (3D Design) from Technological University Dublin (2019), a Postgraduate Certificate in Zero Carbon Engineering from Queen's University Belfast (2021), a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development from Ulster University (2021), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice from Ulster University (2025). He is currently completing his PhD at Ulster University (2021-2026) investigating Sustainable Development.
Lawrence's research integrates sustainability with design, bridging design practice and social/environmental responsibility. His work develops innovative solutions aligned with global sustainability goals and circular economy principles. His PhD thesis focuses on 'The Co-Design of a Novel Scoring Framework for Sustainable Design and Architectural Products and Materials' and contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals.
His publications demonstrate expertise across medical device design, contemporary design exhibitions, and design journalism, with work spanning practical orthopedic devices, design showcases, and industry publications.

Lawrence has contributed significantly to curriculum development across multiple programs, served on a Task and Finish Group for postgraduate provision, and mentored educators for Higher Education Academy fellowships. He actively participates in academic conferences including the Neuro-Diversity Staff Support Workshop, Festival of Learning, Teaching and The Student Experience, and the National Conference on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education.
As a practicing designer since 2010, he maintains memberships with Queen's University Centre for Sustainability, Equality and Climate Action (SECA), Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI), and Design and Craft Council Ireland (DCCI). His creative work appears in Icon Magazine and various exhibitions.
