Lawrence Kirsch is an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Brandeis University's Martin A. Fisher School of Physics. He earned his PhD in Physics from Rutgers University in 1964. His research focuses on high-energy physics, including antiproton-proton interactions, BB mixing, and the ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). He has contributed to experiments at Fermilab's Collider Detector Facility (CDF) and played key roles in constructing the muon subsystem of the ATLAS detector. Kirsch has held significant academic positions, including Director of the Computer Center at Brandeis (1970–1985) and Chair of the Physics Department (1987–1989). He is a recipient of the IBM Research Fellowship (1962–1964).
His research spans particle physics experiments, with notable contributions to studies of charm particles, jet production, and top quark properties. Kirsch’s work includes over 200 publications, many in collaborations like the CDF and ATLAS teams. His experiments have explored topics such as W and Z boson production, QCD jet dynamics, and searches for new particles like supersymmetric partners and exotic mesons.
Key scientific milestones include measurements of charged-particle multiplicities in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and contributions to the discovery of the top quark. He has also analyzed data from the Tevatron collider, focusing on dilepton events and precision top mass determinations. Kirsch’s research continues to advance understanding of fundamental particle interactions and detector technology.
