Lawrence H. White is a professor of economics at George Mason University and a Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Mercatus Center's F. A. Hayek Program. His academic career has been dedicated to advancing our understanding of monetary systems, with particular expertise in free banking and market-based monetary arrangements.
White's research interests include:
- Market-based monetary systems
- Free banking
- Monetary economics
- Economic history
- Austrian School of Economics
White is best known for his seminal work on free banking, particularly his book 'Free Banking in Britain,' which examines the successful operation of Scotland's unregulated banking system from 1792 to 1845. His research demonstrates that competitive, privately-issued currency can provide greater monetary stability than central banking systems. White argues that historical evidence challenges conventional wisdom about the necessity of central banks for financial stability.
White has authored several important books including 'Free Banking in Britain' (Cambridge, 1984; 2nd ed., IEA 1995), 'Competition and Currency' (New York University, 1989), and 'The Theory of Monetary Institutions' (Blackwell, 1999). His more recent publications include 'The Clash of Economic Ideas' (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and (as co-editor) 'Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution' (Cato Institute, 2015).
White's scholarly work has appeared in leading economics journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking. His research has significantly contributed to the understanding of historical monetary systems and theoretical aspects of market-based monetary arrangements.
Outside of traditional academic publishing, White hosts bimonthly podcasts for Econ Journal Watch Audio and maintains a blog at Alt-M.org, where he engages with current monetary policy issues and shares insights from his research with a broader audience.
