Lawrence A Lawver is a Senior Research Scientist Emeritus at the Institute for Geophysics within the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin. His work focuses on paleogeographic reconstructions, plate tectonics, and the geophysical evolution of polar regions, particularly the Arctic and Antarctic. He uses marine magnetic anomalies, heat flow data, and aerogeophysical techniques to study continental break-up processes and their climatic impacts.
His research emphasizes understanding the opening of the Canada Basin in the Arctic and the role of plate tectonics in long-term climate change. Collaborations, such as with Marta Ghidella on Weddell Sea tectonics, highlight his interdisciplinary approach. Recent studies include vertical land movements on South Georgia Island and geodetic analyses of sea level changes in the South Atlantic.
Lawver is a principal investigator in the PLATES project, leveraging global databases for tectonic modeling. His publications span plate reconstructions, gateway evolution in the Scotia Sea, and crustal structure analyses in Antarctica. Despite no listed formal advisees, his work has significantly influenced geoscience education and polar research outreach.
