Lavinia Maddaluno is a permanent Researcher at the Department of Humanities, Ca' Foscari University of Venice. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge, an MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science from Cambridge, and a BA/MA in Philosophy from the University of Pisa.
Her research bridges early modern intellectual history and the history of science, focusing on how scientific knowledge shaped statecraft, economic policies, and societal transformations in Europe (17th-18th centuries). Key projects include analyzing water governance in Marseille/Paris, political economy in Milan, and rice cultivation's impact on medical theories. She is completing a book on Political Economy and Scientific Practices in Milan (1760-1805), to be published by Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment.
Recent publications span environmental history, material culture, and scientific knowledge systems, including studies on pineapple symbolism in Rome, 17th-century hydraulic conflicts, and Counter-Reformation medical practices. Her work has been supported by fellowships at the Warburg Institute, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and the European University Institute.
