Laurie Sloan is an Emerita Associate Professor of Printmaking at the University of Connecticut’s School of Fine Arts, Department of Art and Art History. She holds an M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia, PA, and Rome, Italy) and a B.F.A. from Miami University (Oxford, OH). Her interdisciplinary work bridges art and science, exploring themes like natural world mysteries, life science research, and organic processes through printmaking techniques such as intaglio, relief, and digital recombination.
Her artwork has been showcased in prominent exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, including at the Manhattan Graphic Arts Center, International Print Center NY, and Real Art Ways. Her works are part of major collections like the DeCordova Museum and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Sloan has received the Connecticut Commission on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and multiple juried awards. She has lectured widely, including at the University of Alberta and Massachusetts College of Art.
Her research focuses on visual narratives that reflect scientific uncertainty and the interplay between form and meaning. She employs a ‘visual language’ of recombined shapes, inspired by scientific illustration and digital taxonomy, to create prints that evoke mutation, evolution, and unresolved narratives.
