Laurie S. Kohn serves as the Jeffrey & Martha Kohn Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law at George Washington University Law School. She also directs the Family Justice Litigation Clinic and the Access to Justice Clinic, which she launched in 2022. Previously, she served as the Jacob Burns Foundation Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (2019-2025) and oversaw the launch of GW's Bar Success Program as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Development, Graduate Programs, and Online Learning (2024-2025).
Her educational background includes a BA from Harvard University and JD and LLM degrees from Georgetown University Law Center. Before joining GW Law in 2010, she was Co-Director of the Domestic Violence Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center.
Professor Kohn's research focuses on family law, domestic violence, restorative justice, and clinical pedagogy. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent commitment to understanding and improving the legal system's response to domestic violence, with particular attention to victim experiences, credibility assessment issues, and innovative approaches like restorative justice. Her publications span over two decades, showing evolving perspectives on issues like #MeToo, custody arrangements in domestic violence cases, and the intersection of free speech and victim protection.
Outside her academic role, Kohn serves as a hearing commissioner in police misconduct cases for the DC Office of Police Complaints and as a mediator with the DC Superior Court's Family Court ADR Program. She is also actively involved in DC court committees related to family law and has previously chaired the DC Bar Family Law Section Steering Committee.
Her professional experience includes private practice at Crowell & Moring focusing on medical malpractice and insurance coverage litigation, work on the Americans with Disabilities Act in Senator Edward M. Kennedy's office and the Department of Justice, and policy work at the ACLU Legislative Office on reproductive rights and disability policy.
