Laurie Kilpatrick, PhD, is the Associate Dean of Research at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University. She holds professorial appointments in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Inflammation; the Center for Inflammation and Lung Research; and the Thoracic Medicine and Surgery department. Her research focuses on inflammatory mechanisms in sepsis, particularly neutrophil heterogeneity, endothelial-leukocyte interactions, and translational therapies targeting Protein Kinase C-delta (PKCδ).
Dr. Kilpatrick earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania (1998) and a BA from Hampshire College (1992). Her postdoctoral training was in Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania (1998-2002).
Her research combines organ-on-chip technologies, omics approaches, and in silico modeling to identify sepsis patient subgroups with distinct neutrophil phenotypes. Current projects investigate how neutrophil functional states influence vascular injury and therapeutic responses (precision medicine), while translational work evaluates anti-PKCδ therapies to protect organs without compromising pathogen clearance.
Key contributions include demonstrating species differences in neutrophil-endothelium interactions between mice and humans, and discovering how PKCδ inhibition improves survival in sepsis models by enhancing phagocytic function. Collaborative efforts focus on integrating clinical data with experimental models to accelerate therapeutic development.
