Laurie A. Freeman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. She joined UCSB in 1996 following a fellowship at Harvard University's Program on U.S.-Japan Relations. Her research focuses on comparative politics, with a specialization in Japanese politics, media systems, and the intersection of information technology and democracy.
Her academic contributions include a book on media cartels in Japan (2000) and analyses of media's role in civil society and U.S.-Japan relations. She holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1996) and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship (2000-01) to study internet-driven civil society in Japan. Current projects include a book on information technology and democracy in comparative contexts.
Freeman teaches courses such as Theories of Comparative Politics, Government and Politics of Japan, and Politics and Communication. Her work bridges empirical political analysis with technological and communicative dimensions, emphasizing Japan as a key case study.
