Erin Aeran Chung is the Charles D. Miller Professor of East Asian Politics and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. She previously led the Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship (RIC) Program and the East Asian Studies Program at Hopkins. Her research focuses on East Asian political economy, comparative citizenship, migration politics, civil society, and racial politics. Chung holds a PhD from Northwestern University and has authored influential books like Immigration and Citizenship in Japan (2010) and Immigrant Incorporation in East Asian Democracies (2020), which received multiple awards.
Her work explores Japan's 'non-immigration' policy paradox, South Korea's ethnic returnee dynamics, and diasporic citizenship in the U.S., Japan, and China. She has been affiliated with institutions such as Harvard’s Weatherhead Center and the University of Tokyo. At Johns Hopkins, she teaches courses on Japanese, Korean, and Asian American politics, alongside graduate courses on citizenship, migration, and comparative racial politics.
Chung’s research has been supported by grants from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) and the SSRC Abe Fellowship. She currently co-directs the Initiative on Critical Responses to Anti-Asian Violence (CRAAV). Awards include the 2021 ASA Transnational Asia Book Award and the 2021 Korea Ministry of Education Research Excellence Award. Her work bridges theoretical contributions with policy relevance in migration and citizenship studies.
