Lauri Matias Heinonen

Lauri Matias Heinonen is a visiting scholar and project researcher in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki. He is also a PhD candidate at Otto-Friedrich Universität Bamberg, focusing on historical economic practices, and will serve as a project researcher in the Artic Axis project at the Finnish National Defence University starting March 2025.

• Education: MA (M.Soc.Sci) and BA (B.Soc.Sci) in Economic and Social History from the University of Helsinki (awarded 2019 and 2023 respectively).
• Research Focus: Economic and Social History, innovation, international trade, emerging markets, and digital humanities.

Heinonen’s work examines transitions in fiscal systems, particularly in the project Nordic Fiscal States from the 16th to the 21st Centuries, analyzing shifts from warfare to welfare states. His PhD research at Bamberg explores freight transport practices on the Rhine (1630–1810) to understand early modern economic dynamics.

Scientific Awards:

• Tekniikan Historian Seuran (THS) 2. gradupalkinto (Recipient, April 2024).

Heinonen contributes to the Finnish Patent Database 1842–1940 and engages in media outreach, including a scheduled presentation at the Tekniikan museo in December 2024. His interdisciplinary expertise bridges history, economics, and digital humanities.
