Laurent CHATEL is a Professor at the University of Lille, affiliated with the Faculty of Languages, Culture and Societies and the Department of English Studies. He is a member of ULR 4074 - Center for Studies in Civilizations, Languages and Foreign Literature.
His research focuses on History of Gardens and Landscape, Arabian Nights and Orientalism in Great Britain (18th-19th centuries), William Beckford studies, and Arts - Aesthetics - British Visual Cultures of the 18th-19th centuries. His work bridges literary studies, cultural history, and environmental humanities.
Professor CHATEL's recent publications examine Capability Brown's influence, French perceptions of British gardens, and the philosophical dimensions of 18th-century garden aesthetics. His research demonstrates consistent engagement with cross-cultural landscape perspectives and historical environmental consciousness.
He leads the collaborative Jean Monnet Module project "Cross-perspectives on the landscape" (2023-2026) funded by the European Commission and organized the 2023 conference "Landscape, between matter and spirit" in collaboration with Louvre-Lens.
