Dr. Laurence De Clippele is a Lecturer in Marine Ecology at the University of Glasgow, specializing in deep-sea benthic habitats and coastal ecosystems. She develops machine learning tools for biodiversity analysis using imagery and passive acoustic data, focusing on cold-water coral reefs, sponge grounds, and climate-human impacts.
- PhD in Deep-Sea Ecology (North-East Atlantic)
- Published award-winning GIS tools for coral biomass mapping
- Current projects: offshore wind farm biodiversity, Arctic coral AI analysis, and acoustic fish monitoring
- Collaborated in Horizon 2020 trans-Atlantic research
Research Interests: Combines marine ecology, acoustics, and computer vision to analyze biodiversity shifts from big datasets. Key areas include cold-water coral reef functioning, machine learning applications, and science communication.
Scientific Awards:
- 2019: Best Early Career Researcher Presentation (Deep Sea Biology Society)
- 2015: Heriot-Watt Public Engagement Award
Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD projects on coral-sponge competition and habitat mapping. Secured Scottish Government funding for offshore wind biodiversity monitoring (2023-2025). Serves as Global Assessor for IUCN Red List (2023).
