Dr. Lauren Weidner is an Assistant Professor of Forensic Entomology and Director of the Forensic Entomology & Wildlife Laboratory (FEWL) at Arizona State University (ASU), housed within the New College School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. She holds affiliations with the School of Interdisciplinary Forensics and the School of Life Sciences. As a Senior Global Futures Scholar, her work bridges forensic science, ecology, and wildlife conservation.
Education: She earned a B.S. in Forensic Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice (2010) and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Rutgers University (2016). She served as Past President of the North American Forensic Entomology Association (NAFEA) and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Entomology (ABFE).
Research focuses on insects as bioindicators in forensic contexts, including carrion colonization dynamics, insect biodiversity in ecologically sensitive areas, and collaborations with agencies to combat illegal insect trafficking. FEWL’s mission integrates forensic science with ecological outreach, addressing archaeological investigations and wildlife conservation.
Teaching includes courses like 'Fundamentals of Forensic Entomology' and 'Forensic Science Service Learning.' Her work spans peer-reviewed articles in Journal of Forensic Sciences, Journal of Medical Entomology, and Forensic Science International, emphasizing blow fly ecology, larval identification, and forensic applications. Recent publications explore arthropod communities on carrion, blow fly distributions in Sicily and Ecuador, and high-temperature survival limits in forensic insects.
Professional associations include the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Entomological Society of America. FEWL collaborates internationally, exemplified by workshops at Umeå University in Sweden.
