Dr. Laurel Stevenson serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at Oakland University's School of Health Sciences. She holds a PhD in Health Behavior from Indiana University, an MPH from the same institution, and a BA in Spanish from the University of Michigan.
Her research focuses on using mixed-methods and community-based approaches to address health disparities in low-resource settings, with particular emphasis on food systems, physical activity promotion, and HIV/AIDS prevention. She has partnered with organizations such as the Cornerstone Foundation of Belize, Detroit SOUP, and the Lawn Academy to develop community-driven health initiatives. Her work emphasizes improving individual and community capacity to achieve better health outcomes.
Dr. Stevenson's teaching interests include global health, bioethics, community health programming, and research methodologies. Her recent scholarship has explored food insecurity in Belize, pandemic adaptation strategies for health programs, and the impact of microfinance on community health initiatives. She actively collaborates with local and international partners to bridge academic research and practical health interventions.
Her professional affiliations include the American Public Health Association and the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Learning. Outside academia, she enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and yoga, alongside culinary pursuits and travel.
