Laura Winkiel is a Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies at the University of Colorado. As an Affiliate Faculty member in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, her research bridges modernist literature, postcolonial studies, environmental theories, and feminist critique. She has authored influential works such as Modernism: The Basics (2017) and Modernism, Race, and Manifestos (2008), and co-edited Geomodernisms: Race, Modernism, Modernity (2005). Her current project, Modernism and the Middle Passage, explores intersections of modernist literature with transatlantic slavery and environmental thought.
Winkiel’s academic service includes roles as American editor of Twentieth Century and Contemporary British and Postcolonial Literature for Literature Compass and senior editor of English Language Notes. She served as President of the Modernist Studies Association (2017–2018), reflecting her leadership in shaping modernist studies as a global, interdisciplinary field. Her scholarship emphasizes transnational, ecological, and intersectional approaches to modernism, challenging Eurocentric narratives through postcolonial and feminist frameworks.
Her research interests span British literature, environmental literature, ethnic literatures of the Americas, and gender studies. She has published widely in journals like Modernism/Modernity and Journal of Modern Literature, with articles addressing queer ecologies, hydro-critical theory, and the global dimensions of modernist aesthetics.
Winkiel’s work often intersects with contemporary debates on climate change, decolonial theory, and the legacies of empire. Her edited volumes and advisory roles highlight her commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and expanding the scope of modernist studies beyond traditional boundaries.
