Laura V. Machia is an Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives and Curriculum and a Professor of Psychology at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on understanding relationship dynamics, particularly how individuals navigate commitment, conflict, and identity within romantic, platonic, and human-AI relationships. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Purdue University (2012), an M.S. from the same institution (2008), and a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Colorado, Boulder (2006).
Her research interests include interdependence theory, close relationships, and the evolving role of friendship in modern society. Notable works include co-editing Interdependence, Interaction, and Relationships (2020) and contributing to the Cambridge Handbook of Personal Relationships. She has explored topics such as relationship deterioration, singlehood stereotypes, and the psychological impact of attachment anxiety.
Dr. Machia has received the Editor's Choice Article award from the American Psychological Association (2025). She actively contributes to academic service, serving as an editorial board member for journals like Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and chairs Syracuse University's Arts & Sciences Academic Committee. She teaches courses on social dilemmas, close relationships, and forensic psychology.
Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with contemporary issues, such as human-AI relationships and the societal perception of singlehood. She collaborates on grants exploring relational maintenance, commitment regulation, and the psychological consequences of social isolation.
