Laura Tortorelli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University (MSU), where she focuses on integrating quantitative and mixed methods approaches to study reading and writing instruction. Her work emphasizes foundational literacy skills and their policy implications. She teaches in MSU’s Elementary Education program, ranked #1 in the U.S. for 30 years, and leads preservice teacher preparation initiatives. Additionally, she served as an Associate Editor of The Reading Teacher from 2020 to 2024.
Dr. Tortorelli holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her research includes projects like the IDEAL initiative, funded by the Spencer Foundation, which co-designs digital text resources with teachers, and the Read STOP Write program, supported by the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund. She collaborates with MAISA to advance the Michigan Literacy Essentials, aiding literacy coaches and educators in practical implementation.
She has been recognized as an Emerging Scholar by the Reading Hall of Fame and as a Jeanne Chall Visiting Researcher by Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. Her grants and partnerships highlight a commitment to bridging research and practice, particularly in digital equity and evidence-based literacy strategies. She engages in outreach and advisory roles, contributing to both academic and community-driven educational efforts.
