Professor Laura Roberts is the Associate Dean for Education in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University. Previously, she served as School Education Lead for Biosciences, Geography and Physics (2021–22) and Director of Learning and Teaching for the College of Science (2019–2021). Her roles focus on enhancing learning, teaching, and assessment practices, program development, and strategic delivery of undergraduate/postgraduate programs. She holds a PhD in Conservation Biology (2010) and a PGCE, lecturing in Biosciences since 2011. Her disciplinary expertise spans Ecology and Freshwater Biology, with a focus on pedagogical innovation in higher education.
Research interests include ecology education, assessment practices, and graduate employability. She leads field courses in conservation and ecology, aligning with industry standards. Recent research explores open-assessment methods, employer-informed learning frameworks, and digital skill development in STEM. Key publications address graduate employability through work-simulated learning and the effectiveness of open-book exams.
Her teaching portfolio includes modules like BIO331 (Professional Skills in Conservation) and BIOM22 (Advanced Techniques in Biodiversity Assessment), emphasizing employability and professional competencies. Supervised projects include studies on peatland ecosystems and emerging ecological technologies.
