Laura Rickard is a Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine. She holds affiliated faculty roles at the Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, Climate Change Institute, Aquaculture Research Institute, and the NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) grant program.
- Education: B.A. in Environmental Studies (Brown University), M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication (Cornell University)
Research Focus: Explores communication dynamics in science, health, environmental, and risk-based contexts using mixed methods. Key projects include strategic messaging for climate change risk perceptions and public attitudes toward sustainable aquaculture development, funded by NOAA. Collaborates with agencies like the National Park Service and Maine Sea Grant.
Teaching: Offers courses in risk communication (undergraduate/graduate levels) and graduate communication theory. Previously served as Assistant Professor at SUNY-ESF before joining UMaine in 2015.
