Brian Beal serves as Cooperating Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences and Research Director of the Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research and Education (DEI). Affiliated with the University of Maine at Machias since May 1985, he conducts field-based research on commercial shellfish species ecology and mariculture applications in eastern Maine.

Research Focus
Dr. Beal specializes in the ecology and natural history of eastern Maine's commercial shellfish, including soft-shell clams, northern hard clams, sea scallops, blue mussels, European oysters, mahogany quahogs, Arctic surf clams, green sea urchins, and American lobsters. His field experiments examine growth, survival, and species interactions (predation/competition) while developing mariculture techniques for sustainable production. Research integrates ecological principles with practical aquaculture solutions to support coastal communities.
Research Infrastructure
He established DEI's 6,400 sq-ft shellfish research center on 11 acres at Great Wass Island (Beals, ME), serving as UMaine Machias' marine field station. Recent NSF and Maine Technology Institute grants funded a 1,000 sq-ft marine education center (wet lab/classroom) and 30x100 ft composite pier. The facility includes two 3-acre tidal impoundments for mesocosm research, with $3.25 million expansion planned for running seawater labs, climate-controlled rooms, and scientist offices.
Community Impact
Dr. Beal secures infrastructure grants to create educational and economic opportunities for downeast Maine communities, emphasizing applied marine research that bridges scientific discovery with local aquaculture industry needs through DEI's non-profit operations.
