Brian Beal is a Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Maine at Machias. He holds a Ph.D. in Marine BioResources from the University of Maine (1993), an M.S. in Marine Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1983), and a B.S. from the University of Maine at Machias (1979). He has been affiliated with UMM since 1985, initially as an Environmental Education Project Assistant and later as the first Environmental Resources Coordinator. His work combines teaching and applied research, focusing on commercially important shellfish and coastal marine ecosystems.
Research interests include benthic ecology, shellfish hatchery development, and statistical methods in biological studies. He co-founded the Beals Island Regional Shellfish Hatchery (1987) and helped establish the Downeast Institute (DEI) for Applied Marine Research and Education (2000), now UMM’s Marine Science Field Station. DEI supports undergraduate research in shellfish aquaculture, coastal organism studies, and stock enhancement programs.
Teaching includes courses like Oceanography, Marine Biology, and Experimental Design. His applied research spans lobster and clam hatchery operations, marine resource management, and statistical analysis in ecological studies. Collaborations with local communities focus on sustainable shellfish stock enhancement.
No scientific awards are explicitly mentioned. Advising and grants are integral to his role, though specific grant details are not provided. DEI serves as a central hub for student internships and fieldwork opportunities in marine science.
