Laura Niemi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Management and Organizations at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, SC Johnson College of Business. She leads the Applied Moral Psychology Lab, which investigates psychological foundations of human morality and applies findings to address social issues through interdisciplinary approaches integrating social psychology, cognitive science, and psycholinguistics.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Social Psychology and Social Neuroscience from Boston College (2015), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University (2015-2017) working with Steven Pinker and Jesse Snedeker on the Psycholinguistics of Morality project, and at Duke University (2017-2018) focusing on causal cognition and moral decision-making with Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and Felipe De Brigard.
Dr. Niemi's research examines moral judgment mechanisms, decision-making processes in ethical contexts, and applications to social challenges. Primary interests include moral psychology, social cognition, applied behavioral science, and the psychological underpinnings of how people form moral judgments about right/wrong, help/harm, and value systems. Her work employs experimental methods to understand real-world moral phenomena.
Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate strong interdisciplinary trends in climate psychology, political moral judgments, epistemic injustice, and applied moral decision-making, with significant international collaboration. Research consistently addresses contemporary societal issues through behavioral science lenses.
Her research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Templeton Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Cornell Center for Social Sciences, and other major funders. She teaches courses including 'The Psychology of Good and Evil', 'Moral Psychology in Action', and 'Work and Well-Being' at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dr. Niemi directs the Applied Moral Psychology Lab at Cornell, which combines experimental methods with real-world applications to study morality. The lab focuses on translating research insights into practical solutions for social challenges and maintains active collaborations across multiple disciplines including philosophy, cognitive neuroscience, and organizational behavior.
