Dr. Laura Matthews is a University Academic Fellow at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health. She leads the Nuclear Receptor Research Group, focusing on hormone-regulated transcription factors in cancer contexts.
- Education: BSc in Neuroscience (University of Manchester), PhD in Endocrine Sciences (University of Manchester, supervised by Professors Melissa Westwood and Michael Taggart).
Research Interests revolve around Nuclear Receptors (NRs), which mediate cellular changes in response to metabolites and hormones. Her work explores NR dysfunction in aggressive brain (Glioblastoma) and breast (Triple Negative) cancers, emphasizing their potential as drug targets for synthetic modulators.
Scientific Awards include the Society for Endocrinology Career Development Grant (2009) and the University of Manchester Stepping Stones Fellowship (2010).
- Students: Supervised PhD candidates include Alexandria Kilvington, Freya Leif, and Fiona Leslie. Alumni advisees span PhD, MRes, and MSc graduates from 2013–2021.
Labs & Teams: Based in the Wellcome Trust Brenner Building at St James's University Hospital, she collaborates with the Brain Cancer Research Group and Breast Cancer Research Group.
