Laura López-Sanders is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Brown University. Her research focuses on societal institutions, policies, and practices that shape inequality, with an emphasis on racial dynamics, immigrant integration, and health access. She examines the transition from a two-group (black-white) to a three-group (black-white-Latino) racial system, using ethnographic methods and interviews in South Carolina. Her work also explores health care reform's impact on undocumented Latino immigrants at Federally Qualified Health Centers and community hospitals, comparing experiences in traditional versus new immigrant destinations.
López-Sanders investigates health decision-making mechanisms, such as the continued use of coal stoves in Guatemala despite policy interventions, and evacuation decisions during Hurricane Patricia in Mexico. Her methodologies blend qualitative approaches, including fieldwork and ethnography, to understand structural and individual-level factors influencing social outcomes.
