Laura Lorentzen is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at Kean University's Dorothy and George Hennings College of Science, Mathematics and Technology. As principal investigator of the NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, she leads initiatives bridging scientific research with educational innovation. Her interdisciplinary work spans molecular biology, science education, and community-based research.
Research encompasses biomedicine (particularly Huntington's disease mechanisms), molecular evolution, and physiology, with strong emphasis on pedagogical innovation. She pioneers citizen science approaches for ecological studies and develops evidence-based teaching methods for STEM education. Recent work includes fungal biodiversity documentation through community science and case-based medical education frameworks.
Publications (2009-2025) reflect dual expertise in biological sciences and science education. Biomedical research focuses on genetic disorders and physiological adaptations, while educational scholarship examines innovative teaching methodologies and public engagement with science. Citizen science publications demonstrate effective community-researcher partnerships for biodiversity monitoring.
As NSF Noyce Program PI, she directs initiatives preparing STEM educators through curriculum development, field experiences, and research mentoring. Her academic leadership includes former presidency of the New Jersey Academy of Science and editorial roles with the Association for Women in Science Magazine.
