Laura Kloepper is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), part of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture. Her research focuses on animal acoustics, particularly bat echolocation, and its ecological applications. She leads the Ecological Acoustics and Behavior Lab, which develops technologies like drones and thermal tracking to study animal behavior and population dynamics.
Education: Ph.D. in Zoology/Animal Biology from the University of Hawaii Manoa. She teaches courses including BIOL 412: Introductory Biology, BIOL 827: Animal Communication, and Acoustic Ecology.
Research interests include sensorimotor adaptations in echolocating bats, collective behavior in flying groups, and passive acoustic methods for wildlife conservation. Current projects involve predator-prey interactions between hawks and bats, algorithms for analyzing bat call recordings, and population censusing of frogs, seabirds, and Antarctic penguins using acoustic approaches.
Her work is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Collaborations include Oxford University, University of Notre Dame, and Brown University.
