Laura J. Crossey

Laura J. Crossey is a Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico (UNM), affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. She has served as Interim Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Academics, and Chair of the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences. Her research focuses on low-temperature geochemistry, geomicrobiology, and water-rock interactions, with applications to hydrochemistry, diagenesis, and geothermal processes. Crossey’s work integrates field studies, laboratory analysis, and geochronology, particularly in the Grand Canyon region and on Mars through her role as an MSL Science Team Collaborator for the Mars Science Laboratory Rover.

Education: Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Wyoming (1985), preceded by a M.S. from Washington University in St. Louis and B.A. from Colorado College. She has mentored over 37 graduate students (13 PhD, 22 MS, 2 postdocs) and 63 undergraduates, many of whom pursued advanced studies. Her contributions to geoscience education include leadership in the Trail of Time exhibit at Grand Canyon National Park, recognized by the AIPG Career Achievement Award.

Research interests span planetary sciences (Mars geochemistry), sedimentology, paleoclimate, and hydrogeology. Key projects include groundwater studies in Grand Canyon, tectonic geomorphology of the Colorado Plateau, and Mars analog research. Awards include AAAS and GSA Fellowships and the 2019 Birdsall Dreiss Distinguished Lectureship. She also advocates for STEM diversity through programs like NM AMP and LS-AMP, supporting underrepresented groups in geosciences.

Recent publications focus on Martian evaporite modeling, Grand Canyon incision history, and mantle-derived fluids in Tibet. Her collaborative work bridges geology, microbiology, and planetary science, addressing global challenges in water resources and paleoclimatology.
