Laura J Hardie is a Visiting Professor of Nutrition, Metabolism and Health at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Medicine and Molecular Epidemiology Unit. Her career spans molecular epidemiology, maternal/child health, and nutritional biomarker development.
- Education: BSc (Hons) Biology (1983), PhD (1991) from University of Aberdeen
- Key Affiliations: Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre
Research focuses on diet-gene interactions in non-communicable diseases, particularly:
- Barrett’s esophagus/oesophageal cancer (genetic susceptibility, DNA damage, IGF axis)
- Maternal/child health (iodine status, prenatal exposures)
- Nutritional assessment tools (myfood24, Oxford WebQ)
- Sleep-nutrition interactions (chrononutrition, circadian rhythms)
Grant leadership includes:
- £1.4M Public Health England project on iodine in pregnancy
- £1.2M MRC grant for 24h dietary recall tool
- £1.0M EC funding for NewGeneris birth cohort study
- £345k Department of Health metabolomic analysis grant
Her NewGeneris project (2006-2011) investigated newborn genotoxic exposure risks through diet and environment, while recent work links adiposity to rheumatoid arthritis and explores sleep-diet-metabolism relationships using UK Biobank data.
