Laura Heyderman is a Professor of Mesoscopic Systems at the Department of Materials, ETH Zurich, since 2013. She is affiliated with the Paul Scherrer Institute, where she served as Head of the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials Experiments from 2017 to 2022. Her career spans academia, industry, and leadership in magnetic research.
Her research focuses on lithography methods for sub-micrometre magnetic structures, artificial spin ice, and 3D magnetic systems, leveraging synchrotron x-rays, muon spectroscopy, and neutron scattering for characterization. These studies underpin advancements in spintronic devices, magneto-mechanical systems, and next-generation computation and sensing technologies.
- Scientific Awards
- Beller Lectureship (2016)
- Wohlfarth Prize Lecture (2015)
- Fellow of the Royal Society, American Physical Society, IEEE, and UK Institute of Physics
She actively contributes to academic leadership as Chair of IEEE Magnetics Society Fellows Nomination Committee (2023–now) and has organized workshops like Frontiers in Artificial Spin Ice. Her editorial roles include Special Topic on Mesoscopic Magnetic Systems at APL (2020–2021) and membership on the Journal of Magnetism & Magnetic Materials editorial board (2015–2026).
