Laura Esserman is a Professor of Surgery and Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine and Director of the UCSF Breast Care Center. She leads groundbreaking work in breast cancer screening, treatment optimization, and personalized medicine through major national initiatives including the I-SPY TRIALS platform and the Athena Breast Health Network.
Education
- Harvard University: A.B. in History of Science (1977)
- Stanford University: M.D. (1983)
- Stanford University Graduate School of Business: M.B.A. (1993)
Dr. Esserman's research focuses on revolutionizing breast cancer care through risk-based personalized screening (WISDOM study), adaptive clinical trial design (I-SPY platform), and addressing overdiagnosis/undertreatment. Her work spans basic science to public policy, with emphasis on translating research into clinical practice through learning healthcare systems. She challenges conventional approaches to DCIS management and advocates for patient-centered care models that incorporate individual risk assessment and preferences.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals strong emphasis on genomic risk stratification, health equity in surgical management, liquid biopsy biomarkers, and platform trial methodology. Her work consistently bridges translational science with real-world implementation, particularly through the WISDOM personalized screening trial and I-SPY adaptive platform that has expanded beyond breast cancer into other disease areas including COVID-19 therapeutics.
Scientific Awards
- TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People (2016)
- American-Italian Cancer Foundation Prize for Scientific Excellence (2024)
- Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction (2020)
- Giant of Cancer Care Award (2018)

As Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants totaling over $50 million, Dr. Esserman leads major initiatives including the WISDOM personalized screening study (R01CA237533) and I-SPY2 platform trials (P01CA210961). Her laboratory work focuses on tumor microenvironment biology and response prediction, while her leadership in the Quantum Leap Healthcare Collaborative drives innovation in clinical trial methodology. Future work centers on expanding personalized screening models nationally and adapting the I-SPY platform for additional disease areas.
Dr. Esserman directs the UCSF Breast Care Center and leads the Athena Breast Health Network, a statewide learning system integrating clinical care with research across 150,000 women. Her team develops digital tools for risk assessment and patient engagement, while maintaining active collaborations with industry partners, FDA, and NCI through the I-SPY public-private partnership.
