Laura Draetta

Laura Draetta is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Télécom Paris – Institut Mines-Télécom, where she co-holds the Responsibility for Digital Identity (RD-ID) Chair. She is also a Research Fellow at the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine & Society (CSTMS) at the University of California, Berkeley, and an ethics expert for the European Commission.

Her research focuses on the intersection of technology, environment, and publics, analyzing socio-technical controversies (e.g., RFID, smart meters, 5G, facial recognition) through an environmental sociology and STS lens. She emphasizes responsible innovation, ecological performativity, and the ethical implications of digital technologies, particularly their environmental and health impacts.

Laura contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations, including the ANSES Working Group on 5G health risks and the France-Berkeley Fund project on public controversies. She leads the sociological component of the EXPO-ENFANTS project (2020–2022) and has coordinated studies like RESCOMPTE (2017–2020) and RDI (2019–2020). Her work spans international field studies in Italy, China, and California.

She is affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation (i3, CNRS UMR 9217) and the Interaction, Technology, Activity (Interact) research team. Professional memberships include STS Italia, AISLF, and the Chaire C2M.
